Alanis Morissette made an unforgettable debut at the 2023 CMT Music Awards. On Sunday, April 2nd, the iconic rocker was joined by Ingrid Andress, Lainey Wilson, Madeline Edwards, and Morgan Wade to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the "CMT Next Women of Country" franchise with the female-empowerment anthem "You Oughta Know" from her iconic 1995 album Jagged Little Pill.
After an introduction from Carly Pearce, who was supported by the very program, the iconic singer-songwriter, Andress, Wilson, Edwards, and Wade took turns with the opening verses filmed through a fish eye lens. After a power walk across the stage's catwalk, the five singers gathered at the front of the stage, standing in front of a strip of fire, and sang their hearts out along with everyone in the crowd. Ashley McBryde and Chapel Hart were just a few artists who were shown passionately singing along during the performance.
Female empowerment was felt throughout the night with Shania Twain being honored with the CMT Equal Play Award, which celebrates artists who are advocates for "elevating diverse and underrepresented voices in country music." Jennifer Nettles was the first to be honored with the award, followed by Linda Martell.
The star-studded lineup of the awards show, hosted by Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown, also included Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll, Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, The Black Crowes and Darius Rucker, Tyler Hubbard, and Wynonna Judd and Ashley McBryde, among many others.
